Alice Dudgeon: Winnowing in the Wind at Upright Gallery in Edinburgh is the Edinburgh College of Art graduate’s first solo exhibition. Alice’s sculptural vessels are intricate wooden structures achieved through meticulous, labour-intensive, repetitive processes such as steam-bending and hand-carving. The result is a multitude of parts held in a rhythmic whole. Winnowing in the exhibition title refers to a time-consuming process by which grain is refined by tossing it up in the air to separate seeds from husks. Similarly, Dudgeon’s process is a physically demanding and reductive technique.
