What is it That Will Last? Land and Tidal Art of Julie Brook

What is it That Will Last? Land and Tidal Art of Julie Brook

Julie Brook, Simon Groom, Alexandra Harris & Raku Jikinyu

Lund Humphries

This first substantial exploration of Julie Brook’s work coincides with a major solo show at Abbot Hall in Kendal, Cumbria to mark its reopening after redevelopment (until Dec 30). A female voice in a world often thought of as male, Brook’s recent landscape and tidal sculptural works from the Hebrides to Japan to Namibia capture the fleeting, mobile forces of light, time and gravity in vastly contrasting environments. Timeless yet contemporary, they represent a ‘collaboration’ with nature. This beautiful book includes film stills, photography and drawing along with insightful extracts from Brook’s notebooks, providing the reader with an insight into her ‘monuments to the moment’. She says: “Solitude is the heart of the matter. It allows me to inhabit the landscape.”
