Showing at the V&A Dundee, The Dundee Tapestry consists of 35 hand-stitched panels made by over 140 volunteers from Dundee and the surrounding area, who have been working since the spring of 2022, many of them taking up a needle and thread for the first time to tell the story of Dundee stitch-by-stitch. Reaching far beyond the well known headlines of jute, jam and journalism, the panels illustrate the city’s industrial heritage, its creative achievements, its biodiversity and its people from 1850 to the present day.
Individual panels are dedicated to subjects such as medical firsts, comics, gaming, cultural and sporting achievements, women of Dundee who made their mark on the city and the world, Dundee’s design renaissance through buildings such as Maggie’s Centre at Ninewells Hospital by architect Frank Gehry, the V&A Dundee itself, and the city’s status as the first UNESCO City of Design.
