Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh is showing textile works by the iconic artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), all made in the 1950s and ‘60s and sold anonymously and recently rediscovered by collectors and curators Geoffrey Rayner and Richard Chamberlain. Showing for the first time in Scotland, the selection of over 60 works features fabric lengths, garments and prints along with film and photography.
Everyday objects were a key part of the 1950s American textile trade and an important focus for Warhol, who had a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary and was fascinated by repetition, which became an integral part of his Pop art. His playful textile designs are full of lemons, candy apples, pretzels and ice cream desserts inspired by a favourite café, and the Dovecot cafe will be redesigned in honour of Warhol’s works.
Note that following the exhibition, Dovecot Studios will be closed 19th May – 16th June, reopening 17th June.
