Edinburgh painter Ruth Nicol and Linlithgow-based photographer Siljes Elisabet Thorin made the most of the Covid lockdown by joining each other on walks around the Linlithgow area, exploring the routes into and around the Royal Burgh, and discussing the fields and roadways they passed along. Approaching Linlithgow shows their common experience, but in different media, and how each individual perceives that place.
As a visitor to the Burgh, Nicol was drawn to the loch and its place in a hollow, and town’s relationship to the surrounding agriculture and the nearby Forth river. Swedish-born Elisabet has lived in Linlithgow for nearly 30 years, and the detail in her black and white photographs hint at a place’s history, inviting the viewer to enter the landscape.
