Resipole Studios, in Acharacle, Argyll is featuring a joint exhibition by artists Rhea Banker and Jane Rushton, exploring their shared connection to the diverse coastal environment of Mallaig Bheag, where Jane has a croft. The two are long-time collaborators and the art is the result of walks and chats at Mallaig Mhor beach, both expressing their fascination in the intimate detail of the place – which hints at a deep history, and the stories held within the rocks, plant growth, and the evidence of human impact.

Rhea Banker has created a body of photo-based work exploring past, present, and potential future, having spent the past 30 years focusing on the North Atlantic – the Outer Hebrides and the West coast of Greenland – where some of the oldest rocks on Earth expose their travels through time, the sea, wind, stone and vegetation yielding a moving story, symbolising changes now apparent everywhere.

Jane Rushton works across a variety of media, reflecting on the complexity of the natural world, themes of fragility, transience and endurance, with reference to Earth’s geological base, through the abundance of plant and arboreal growth, to the lifeforms that inhabit the coastal regions of northern latitudes, and the rich textures of the natural world.
