Vettriano, Cadell & Lavery go ‘On the Block’

Plus Sotheby’s Scottish Art Sale Preview… Decorative Arts since 1869 at Lyon & Turnbull

Beautiful Losers’, a characteristically enigmatic painting by Jack Vettriano, is expected to fetch £150,000 to £200,000 when it comes up for auction at the next sale of Scottish art at Bonhams. Vettriano’s work commands high prices at auction. In March 2015 Bonhams sold his painting ‘Waltzers’ for £236,500. ‘Beautiful Losers’ was exhibited at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow as part of Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective in 2013-2014. By contrast, another Vettriano painting in the sale, ‘Model in White’, offers a sunnier image. Featuring a woman sitting relaxed in the light pouring through a window, this work is estimated at £40,000 to £60,000.

The contents of the annual London sale of Scottish Art at Sotheby’s (November 22) will be previewed at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. Lots include ‘The Red Chair’ (c.1925) by Scottish colourist F.C.B. Cadell (est. £250,000-350,000) and ‘The Golf Links, North Berwick’ (1922) by Sir John Lavery (est. £300,000- 500,000). One of a series of interiors painted during the 1920s in Cadell’s Edinburgh residence at 6 Ainslie Place, ‘The Red Chair’ was last offered at auction in 1989 by Sotheby’s at Hopetoun House, where it was purchased by the current owners. The Lavery painting was exhibited in Edinburgh at the National Galleries of Scotland in 2014 in The Art of Golf and was last offered at auction in 2002. The market for works by the Scottish Colourists is strong. In 2013, a painting by Cadell, ‘Re ections’, was sold by Sotheby’s for £686,500, establishing a record for the artist at auction which still stands.
