The next live online auction by Edinburgh’s Lyon & Turnbull is The Contents of Lowood House. The House sits by the banks of the river Tweed in Melrose, and its eclectic collection has been amassed by two Scottish lowland families, the Crum Ewings and the Hamiltons. The Crum Ewing’s fortunes were founded by James Ewing (1775-1853), who was Lord Provost and MP for Glasgow in the early 19th century. A series of inheritances and marriages over the following two centuries resulted in the Hamilton family, who settled in Lowood House in 1947. Architect Ian Hamilton (1890-1971) was the son of a painter father and a sculptor mother. Following the death in 2020 of Ian’s son Alexander (1932-2020), the family are now leaving Lowood and wish to pass on the majority of the contents to new owners, with the hope that they will be enjoyed and appreciated as much as they have been for generations.
