Jenny Matthews & Ann Oram RSW: In the Company of Flowers at UNIONGallery in Edinburgh is the two artists’ first joint exhibition, and an oasis of calm away from the festival frenzy. Says Gallery owner Alison Auldjo, ‘It’s easy to dismiss flower painting, but these artists are as far from being hobbyists as it’s possible to get. They have more than sixty years’ experience between them and are absolutely at the top of their game.’
The artists met in the 1980s, when Ann, as a young tutor, taught Jenny in a drawing class at Edinburgh College of Art. Both have gone on to win awards for their work – Jenny as a watercolourist and Ann painting in oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media. While different in style, their interpretations of similar subjects complement each other beautifully. Studying at Edinburgh College of Art a few years apart, they were both taught by the late Scottish artist Elizabeth Blackadder, whose love of still life continues to inspire them.
Look out for the live demonstrations on 20th August: Jenny from 11:30 – 1pm, and Ann RSW from 2:30 – 4pm.
