Under the hammer

Another adventurous enterprise by the Woman who Ate Scotland, has come to our attention. Nell Nelson, cook and writer, has opened another café in Edinburgh. This time it’s at the auction rooms of Ramsay Cornish at Jane Street, Leith., in partnership with Susan Cornish. But you have to time your visit carefully: the Smoking Rabbit operates on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to about 1pm to coincide with the auction sales.

As you would expect with Nell, a lot of thought has gone into the products she is serving up. Take the bacon rolls, for example. The soft white rolls are freshly baked every morning by Jane Street neighbour Lo Spuntino and work perfectly with the crispy bacon and soft sun blush tomato. The Shortbread House of Edinburgh’s handmade rabbit-shaped shortbread is specially made for the café, again locally. Ask Nell about the café’s name. “The rabbit is the unique one-off treasure you might pick up at Ramsay Cornish. We only have a picture of him – in case he gets sold!” [FL]
