Toast to the Lassies: Robert Burns & The Role Of Women | Call for Submissions

Toast to the Lassies: Robert Burns & The Rolfe of Women
Gallery 23 | 23 Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh
January 20 – February 10

Gallery 23 is accepting submissions for an exciting special exhibition being held in the new year!

Burns is widely regarded to have penned some of the English language’s greatest declarations of love and, to celebrate this, Gallery 23 is inviting artists to examine the artist – muse relationship.
Burns’ poetry reveals a man who genuinely adored women and wrote some of the most famous declarations of love ever immortalised in the English language. Addressing notions of femininity, masculinity, and the power struggle between artist, viewer, and subject, this exhibition will be coupled with a catalogue.

Additionally, select works will be on view at a Burns Night evening programme on Friday, January 27 at The Royal Scots Club, where the respected artist Calum Calvin OBE will perform ‘The Immortal Memory’ with reference his own portrait of Burns, now in the National Portrait Gallery.

Artists are encouraged to contact Gallery 23 with pieces which fit the dual theme of gender and the role of women in regards to Burns’ work and relationships! Pieces may be crated especially for the exhibition or artists can submit pre-existing work if it fits the theme of the show.
All works will be for sale at the artist’s discretion, and Gallery 23 will accept a 30% commission of any sales of consigned artwork during the exhibition period.

The exhibition will be held at the gallery’s West End location from January 20 through February 10.
