Edinburgh’s &Gallery is showing work by Katharine Le Hardy – long-admired for her landscape painting. The exhibition is a culmination of several years of thoughtful experimentation, examining ways in which landscapes can communicate narratives and induce in the viewer feelings of nostalgia or escape.
Depicting landscapes with a tenderness and tranquility, Katharine has used personal photos, memories and found imagery as sources of inspiration, creating a world part-imagined and part-remembered: she paints intuitively, working on multiple paintings at once and without preconception of the final composition. Her technique comprises making suggestive and gestural marks using thinned oils, and tools such as brush and scraper to produce marks of unpredictability, reflection energy from organic chaos, resisting order and structure, with layers added over several iterations, rotations and reworkings in a carefully-limited palette.
