The Whitehouse Gallery in Kirkcudbright pays tribute to one of Dumfries & Galloway’s leading lights in the art world with Silvana McLean RSW: 1953-2018, A Life in Art.

As well as a large collection of the late artist’s prints and original paintings, the exhibition will feature four local makers who have been inspired by her work: Amanda Simmons (glass), Lizzie Farey (willow sculpture), Ruth Elizabeth Jones (ceramics) and Hannah McAndrew (ceramics).

A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Silvana McLean incorporated emotion into her work. While the physical reality was portrayed, the painting, print or book also conveyed something intangible. The semi-abstract results invite the viewer to either make up their own story or intuit the artist’s intentions. Much of the collection on display is from McLean’s Icelandic work, completed in 2017 during a five-week winter residency, her last of many visits before illness made work impossible.
