The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra celebrates the music of two legendary names in 20th century music, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Thomas “Fats” Waller, in New Waves. Perhaps best known for his enduring “Girl from Ipanema” and crossover projects with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim was the foremost composer of authentic Brazilian bossa nova and samba-derived jazz music. This cool, sensual music will be articulated by saxophonist and SNJO music director Tommy Smith, Brazilian guitarist Mario Caribe and vocalist Irini Arabatzi. Scotland’s Brian Kellock will bring fresh interpretations to jazz pianist “Fats” Waller’s classic repertoire. An influential, game-changing composer and instrumentalist, Waller has been immortalised in print, on record, on screen and even as an animated cartoon.
