Joan Eardley Centenary at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh celebrates an artist whose works remain as powerful as ever nearly six decades after her death. An outsider in the mid-20th century ‘macho’ Scottish art world, Eardley frequently broke with tradition both as a painter and in her personal life. The two central themes in her work are both represented in the exhibition: the innocence of childhood and the dignity of the human spirit despite the challenges of urban life in Glasgow and the wild coastal landscapes around the village of Catterline in the northeast of Scotland. The exhibition marks the Gallery’s latest contribution to the #eardley100 celebrations marking the centenary of the birth of one of Scotland’s best-loved artists, and is complemented by the publication of a new book, Joan Eardley Centenary.
