A new exhibition at Upright Gallery in Edinburgh brings together two artists – Charlene Scott and Roanne O’Donnell – whose works are calm, contemplative and understated.

Charlene uses hand-made botanical colours on paper, employing repetition through line, folds and pattern to explore quietude. Evolving quietly, her work serves as a reminder of the value in slowing down and how wonder can be found in the uncomplicated. She was recently awarded the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Award, Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation Award, Glasgow Print Studio Award and an NHS Lothian Charity Tonic Arts Award (Purchase Prize) at the Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries 2024 exhibition.

Roanne’s practice focuses on the horizontal line, using charcoal, graphite, oil and cold wax. Bending over paper laid flat, she repeatedly moves her paint mixtures to create a line, over and over again. Her works are on display in major collections such as the Scottish Office, North Norwegian Museum of Art and the Norwegian Arts Council Collection.
