The Fine Art Society in Edinburgh is showing an exhibition of the group of painters who became known as the Glasgow Boys, who eschewed the Victorian sentimentality and Highland scenery prevalent in art at the time, and depicted instead the reality of contemporary rural life. In time the group, which included Joseph Crawhall, James Guthrie, Edward Walton and Arthur Melville, attained a position at the forefront of British art, stirring the awakening of modernism in Scotland, inspired by the subject-matter and square-stroke brush technique of documentary French painter Jules Bastien-Lepage, and the graphic geometry of Japanese printwork.

The Society continues to exhibit the best of Scottish art across the centuries and British art, design and furniture, viewable on its website. See also Kirkcudbright Galleries’ summer exhibition The Glasgow Girls and Boys.
