A new exhibition at Edinburgh Palette is a joint presentation inspired loosely by Gustav Holst’s The Planets, which received its first performance in September 1918. The piece pairs each planet with its mythological or astrological ‘personality’ – Mars, bringer of conflict, Venus, bringer of peace and tranquility, Mercury, the Messenger; these three are encompassed by the Uranus the Mystic and searcher of the Truth Beneath the Surface – a far bigger planet than the other three.
Veronica Casey and John Colles have made similar connections in this exhibition. Portrait painter Veronica takes her inspiration from people she is drawn to and works mainly in acrylic on board. After a lengthy period without art at the centre, she took a course at Leith School of Art, which acted as a springboard for an art career in which she has collaborated with recording artists and exhibited across Edinburgh. John’s work is in the tradition of narrative art, responding to social and political events: with a background in science, innovation and lecturing in problem-solving and creativity, he also spent time at Leith School of Art and became an artist, participating in group shows across Scotland.
