‘We should live our lives – in Nature’s way. Currently, we are – in Nature’s way’. American artist Suzanne Jackson is exhibiting for the first time at Glasgow’s The Modern Institute with a new series of sculpted paintings. Based in Savannah, Georgia, Jackson has excelled as a painter, poet, dancer, teacher, curator and theatre designer over a five-decade career, and with these pieces re-examines the medium, and the genre of abstraction. Her practice is based on upcycling man-made or natural objects, applying acrylic paint washes directly onto sheets of plastic, adding layers of washy pigment, creating fragmented abstract figures and natural motifs that reference her theatrical background, incorporating discarded paper and sheeting such as that used to protect a stage while painting sets, and manipulating it into textural surfaces.
