While work continues to secure future display space for its thriving Highlands arts community An Talla Solais, the final exhibition in its Gallery in Ullapool’s Argyle Street is JW58, by artist Susie Reade. The exhibition harks back to Spring 1944 when, at twenty-four years old, Scotswoman Lavinia Ponsonby was invited to work for the British Embassy in Moscow. With the usual travel routes blocked due to German occupation, she sailed by merchant ship through the Arctic Circle, in an Arctic Convoy, number JW58, assembled in near Ullapool in Loch Ewe, protected by Royal Navy vessels. It tells the story not only of Lavinia’s perilous journey, but how, seventy-five years later, Susie retraced her mother’s steps from Scotland to Moscow, capturing a visual record in large-scale oil paintings in stark monotone, and researching through diary entries, that dangerous voyage in a hostile environment.
