Selkirk’s Burnside gallery & frames is showing Catherine Scott and Walter Bernardini’s exhibition, Still Glory. The Scottish artists have taken the maxim Faded glory is still glory, and though they work in different media, they share a common approach to their subjects. Catherine works in embroidered silk patchwork and watercolour, while Walter is known for his design and paintings, but both celebrate the richness of what they see, translated into their chosen medium, with a shared concern for weathered beauty – something, as Catherine puts it, ‘…simultaneously new and old, I’m celebrating their survival over time; imagining and honouring the original makers.’ Walter, who moved to the Borders only a year ago, produces very carefully-observed paintings, depicting buildings with affection and in detail. He started work in Glasgow in the 1940s, and enjoyed a long career leading a design agency in Ireland. The gallery suggests that both Catherine’s embroidery and Walter’s watercolour should be appreciated best when viewed in situ, in Selkirk’s autumn light.
