Reflecting his travels around his home in rural Aberdeenshire and to the west coast of Scotland, the Northern Isles and Andalucia, Stephen Redpath’s new paintings are inspired by the notion of ‘thin places’ – an expression the ancient Celts used to describe those times when they felt closest to God, as if the veil between the natural world and spiritual world became very thin.

Redpath studied as an ecologist for 30 years before turning to painting full-time. His preferred medium for his landscapes is watercolour due to its luminosity, immediacy andunpredictability. Building on direct observations in the field, his paintings are developed through memories, feelings and an emotional response to the natural world. They lie in the liminal space between representation and abstraction.
