Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives aka Darren Cullen has his first solo show at The Alchemy Experiment in Glasgow, with a selection of prints and original works. Leeds-born and currently based in London, Cullen is a satirical artist, activist and writer who abandoned studies in advertising when he became increasingly horrified at the ethical implications involved and took up Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2005. He now uses the language of advertising to make work about the empty promises of consumerism and the deadly effects of greenwashing.

His best-known projects include: The Hell Bus, a ‘pre-apocalyptic marketing suite’ inside a former Glasgow school bus, satirising Shell’s greenwash ad campaigns, Pocket Money Loans, a payday loan shop offering kids an advance on their pocket money at 5000% APR, and Action Man: Battlefield Casualties, a series of toys and films highlighting child recruitment in the British Army.
