Six rising to the occasion

The baking community is holding its collective breath in anticipation for the announcement of the Scottish Baker of 2013. In the running are Stevens of Dunfermline; Brownings of Kilmarnock; Macleans Highland Bakery of Forres; Cuckoos of Edinburgh and Border Biscuits based in Motherwell.

They are up against the 2012 Scottish Baker of the year Harry Gow of Inverness. There’s already been extensive tasting of their products, a public vote and a grilling by the judges about their business case for why their bakery is the best in Scotland. Celebrity baker Paul Hollywood will announce the winner and present a specially-commissioned silver rolling pin at the prestigious awards ceremony in Glasgow on 18 May.

The winners of the Scottish Restaurant Awards will be announced on 4 June. There’s a broad sweep of categories including best Indian, Oriental, Italian, take away, seafood or urban restaurant. But with Artmag’s interest in a kinder way of dining, we will be watching the Sustainable Restaurant of the Year Award closely. The line-up is: the Mains of Scotstown Lounge and Bar, Bridge of Don; the Lovat, Loch Ness and Cafe St Honore, Edinburgh.
