Simple Simon’s Perfect Pies

Simple Simon’s Perfect Pies were named Best Speciality Producers at the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste 2012 awards. Selected from the 8,807 different entries, the Lanarkshire company’s two pies were described a “faultless” and each pie received two gold stars. Two distinctively Scottish gourmet pies – smoked haddock and leek and sausage and onion went before the judges. Six years ago Bernard Allessi founded his bakery with the aim of creating the best, the most perfect pies and soon his Simple Simon brand was gaining an enviable reputation. Based at a 19th century farm near Biggar, Lanarkshire, the focus is on quality Aberdeen Angus beef, Borders lamb, fresh fish, potatoes, vegetables and herbs all sourced locally. There is a choice of 60 different dishes featuring meat, fish and vegetarian options. Stockists include Jenners, Harvey Nichols and Peckhams or order on line.

Donaldsons of Orkney’s Hot Smoked Salmon was named Best Scottish Speciality at the awards. Following on from the success of its smoked beef and whisky ham the Kirkwall butcher decided to turn its attention to hot and cold smoking salmon, a product readily available in Orkney. The idea has paid off handsomely with the title at the Great Taste Awards 2012.
