Silvy Weatherall: Broken Journeys at Gracefield Arts Centre is showing an exhibition by Dumfries & Galloway-based artist Silvy Weatherall, who is drawn to materials which might be considered worthless or broken, from discarded bones and feathers to a box of broken china. Her sculpture The Last Supper, which was exhibited in St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh earlier this year, is composed of thirteen busts made from smashed crockery. The pieces are fixed together with gold in the Japanese tradition of kitsugi (golden joinery) which finds beauty in imperfection and values the breaks and repairs in ordinary lived experience. Poems, paintings and photographs expand on this theme. There is also a first chance to see a work in progress, Drowning in a Sea of Tears, a poignant reminder of the voyages made by migrants and refugees and a memorial to those who do not survive the journey.
