Richard Wright (b. 1960) studied Painting at Edinburgh College of Art and received his Masters from The Glasgow School of Art, going on to exhibit internationally, and winning the Turner Prize in 2009. His exhibition at The Modern Institute in Glasgow combines a large new site-responsive work (pictured), and new works on paper. Responding to the architecture of the Institute’s Osborne Street space, he has produced a new intricate, abstract work of coloured glass, including hand-made, leaded glass.

Starting life as full-scale (ie. giant) drawings, Wright then cuts thousands of glass pieces to follow a complex lead-matrix, projecting, refracting and reflecting natural light through into the gallery space to encompass the visitor – a vibrant and colourful result of a laborious, exacting process.

Additionally, new works on paper are on show, echoing his enduring ‘dialogue’ with constructivism’s concrete language and with 1930’s Soviet avant-garde poster design.
