A new exhibition at Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock showcases artist Lois Green’s work. Her studio practice is focused on creating small-scale tonal paintings and drawings from found imagery, photographs and film stills, produced ‘by continuously removing and applying oil or charcoal to a variety of prepared surfaces’. She depicts intimate spaces such as domestic settings, using light and tone to uncover each image’s emotional weight, and engages through the uncertainties attached to understanding an image of an ostensibly familiar scene. The exhibition’s title Habitual is a reference to certain settings from her past, resulting in a series of paintings and drawings which also consider our daily habits and routines.
