An unusual exhibition is marking the first year of Virgin Square in St Monans in Fife: work by thirteen artists has been selected to fill the gaps ‘missing’ from the artist Frank Easton‘s exhibition A Hidden World. These artists include Banksy, John Bellany, Whistler, Turner and Paul Furneaux.

Born in 1932, this is Easton’s first exhibition; he has been creating dioramas and ‘boxed narratives’ for over 30 years which have remained in his house in Auchtermuchty: he recently relocated to Devizes in Wiltshire, and his daughter, who went to assist him with his move, discovered a mountain of works smashed to pieces in a skip. Shocked, she retrieved what was salvageable and stopped him from destroying any further works.

Colourful and curious, each piece is a personal commentary on what is in the artist’s head, happening in the outside world, or simply a piece of storytelling, carefully carved and constructed by hand and presented in a box or collage. There were originally 120 completed boxed works. Virgin Square had 19 and 18 are in Easton’s possession, with 83 missing, presumed destroyed.

The gallery is taking the opportunity of its first anniversary to bring the artist to wider attention, tell the story behind the work, and add another 13 artworks as a ‘bakers’ dozen’ in its complementary exhibition A Baker’s Dozen II.
