The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is showing winning works in five categories of the New Light prize – a celebration of talent in northeast England, as well as those from 121 shortlisted artists. All the winners have strong connections to the region, having studied, been brought up or are living there now.

Nat Quinn, ‘Untitled II’, mixed media
Michael Disley, 'Two Bird Tree', Kilkenny marble

The exhibition also includes the winners of the first New Light Sculpture Prize for which Sam Waters, 3D Curator at The Biscuit Factory, has chosen pieces that he says are ‘fresh in their concept and delivery – still accessible, but that also pushed the boundaries a little beyond our usual programming to highlight the broader spectrum of contemporary making.’

Christine Stables, ‘The Art of Balance’, acrylic and ink on canvas board [Winner of the 2023-24 New Light Purchase Prize]
Mandy Payne, ‘Great Expectations’, mixed media on concrete panel
Jacquie Denby, ‘Untitled (J Denby)’, oil on card
