In an inspired collaboration Scottish Opera are teaming up with Vanishing Point Theatre to present Bartok’s mysterious and unsettling adult fairy tale Bluebeard’s Castle. Mathew Lenton directs, and his trademark strokes of spine tingling stage designs and abstract imagery are tailor made for this exquisite but disturbing examination of obsession and trust.
The performance features only two singers but what a dark and creepy piece it is. A bride demands to know what’s lurking behind the seven locked doors of her new husband’s mansion. As a beautifully woven series of intricate and lush orchestrations unfold she discovers that her suspicions are, if anything, too modest. Internationally acclaimed singers Karen Cargill and Robert Hayward bring the characters to life.
The show continues with a double bill featuring a new work by Scottish Opera’s Composer in Residence Lliam Paterson. The 8th Door picks up on Bartok’s themes, exploring the spaces and silences around the story, merging poetry, Hungarian leitmotifs and Paterson’s energetic music. This sparkling new creation involves a cast of singers and actors from around the globe.
