Scottish Ensemble is returning to some of Scotland’s most beautiful and atmospheric venues for its annual series of seasonal performances, Concerts by Candlelight, in which the musicians are lit by warm, flickering candlelight, taking audiences on a journey from the baroque of J S Bach to the present, taking in composers such as Caroline Shaw’s rich expansive melodies, and the sensuous, emotional music of Peteris Vasks.

Concerts last 75 minutes with no interval, and take in Aberdeen St. Machar’s Cathedral (Thurs 1st Dec) Inverness Cathedral (Fri 2nd December), Perth St. John’s Kirk (Sat 3rd), Edinburgh Greyfriars Kirk  (Tues 6th)Dundee Caird Hall (Weds 7th), and finishing at Glasgow Wellington Church (Thurs 8th).

The programme comprises: J S Bach – movements from Violin Concerto in A minor; Peteris Vasks – movements from Concerto for Viola and Strings; Elizabeth Maconchy – Scherzo from Music for Strings; Witold Lutoslawski – movement from Five Folk Melodies; Caroline Shaw – The Beech Tree from Plan & Elevation & Entr’acte; Edmund Finnis – movement from String Quartet no.2, Sally Norris – 40 24 20 10; Thomas Adès – O Albion, and Errollyn Wallen – movement from Photograph.
