Premiered by the Scottish Ensemble for the BBC in 1994, James MacMillan’s landmark setting of the dying words of Jesus Christ, Seven Last Words from the Cross will be performed by the Scottish Ensemble and Dunedin Consort in the former’s 50th anniversary year, across Scotland and in London.
The celebrated Scots composer’s searing setting of Jesus’ words has since acquired a central place in the repertoire, connecting with audiences across the world by weight of astonishing emotional power. Hearing the piece performed is a transformative experience, with juxtaposed moments of ‘aching intensity, heart-rending beauty and raw, keening desolation’ – music that is at once intensely personal and magnificently universal.
Supported by Resonate, a PRS Foundation initiative in partnership with Association of British Orchestras, BBC Radio 3 and Boltini Trust.
