Edinburgh painter Sarah Knox is to stage her solo exhibition Light within at the city’s Dundas Street Gallery. Seeing her paintings as a counterbalance to this century’s tumult and climate crisis, Sarah feels ‘it’s important as an artist to experience stillness; to observe and record the sheer wonder of the landscape and the glimmers of hope and light within.’

Since she grew up in north Norfolk, looking out over tidal marshes, she has harboured a fascination with the relationship of land, sea and sky, and this has been a constant motif in her artwork, and since moving to Scotland, she has loved exploring the country’s wild landscapes, learning to capture them on the spot using paint or ink, often in tough conditions. Sarah says, ‘When I paint, I’m not attempting to create an accurate representation of the coast or a particular mountain; instead, I’ve tried to capture the spirit of the place.’
She then goes on to apply pigment to surfaces, allowing pools of colour to flow and settle, and leaving the natural canvas linen to suggest light within, and achieving a balance of the depth of oil-based colour with the fluidity of watercolour.

She now works from a studio at WASPS Patriothall in Stockbridge in Edinburgh, and Edinburgh Printmakers, and uses the experience of a career in arts broadcasting and art teaching, to teach freelance for the National Galleries of Scotland and run bespoke masterclasses. She exhibits widely, with her paintings and prints in several private and public collections, including Art in Healthcare, Exeter University, London University and the Royal Botanic Garden.
Entry to the exhibition is free, and Sarah is hosting a private view / press event on 1st Oct, 4-8pm.
