Painting from his studio on the west coast of Scotland, Sandy Murphy responds to the landscape around him. His work, on show at Smithy Gallery at Blanefield near Glasgow, which also includes still-lifes, leans towards abstraction, the texture of the rich oil paint often becoming as important as the image represented. His main interest is the relationship between colours, as he builds up the surface of the canvas by reworking the paint, sometimes scraping and layering it to achieve the finished result.
