Goldfinch Gallery in Comrie, Perthshire, is mounting an exhibition of paintings by Ann Wegmuller RSW RWS, based on her winter walks through Glen Lednock. Gourock-born, Ann graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. She says, ‘My first feeling for this Glen was the atmosphere of desolation. The only signs of life were a few sheep on the hill and some red kites above.’ She later learned that the Glen was cleared of 21 settlements between 1750 and 1860 – the inhabitants having been given ‘Assisted Passages’ to Canada and sailing from Greenock. The paintings are created from observing the shapes of farm buildings, dykes and other signs of human activity, which are often easier to make out, softened by a covering of snow.
