Upright Gallery‘s new exhibition Reflections is an ongoing series of drawings by Ross Miller, inspired by a trip he made to Italy last year. Miller worked from snatched reference images he made of sculptures he saw at the Vatican and the Uffizi in Florence, arriving at a mix of meticulous fine line-work, expressive mark-making and detailed realism. Reflecting his rush around on foot to take in as much as he could before catching his train back to Pisa, the resultant sketching is quick, expressive and intuitive, and contrasts in the exhibition with more fully-resolved larger drawings with paint, and a single large piece on wooden panel acting as a painstaking culmination of all the other work, adding up to a highly-personal response to the drama and movement of classical sculpture.
