[Until 10th August]

The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) Kelly Gallery‘s current exhibition is ’Freed Spirit’ – Paintings by Maria Spadoni. Having travelled from her native Italy to Greenock in her twenties, and becoming an artist only in her fifties, Spadoni (1928-2014) was also a prolific poet and a long-time friend of scul?tor George Wyllie and his wife Daphne. She had a fascinating background, was self-taught, seeing painting as a means of freeing her otherwise trapped and lonely spirit, usually working at night, ‘for company’, as she put it. Her semi-abstract paintings attracted much fond critical attention over the intensive 20-year period she painted, after which she concentrated on her poetry.
