Edinburgh’s The Scottish Gallery is set to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Samuel John Peploe (1871 – 1935) this autumn with a major exhibition of his paintings and drawings, curated by his grandson, Guy Peploe. Acknowledged as Scotland’s first Modernist, Peploe underwent a transformation from portraiture and Impressionist landscape painting into altogether more uncharted territory, embracing influences from his years staying in France, adopting new ways with colour, Expressionism, and enjoying relationships with other Scottish artists, resulting in an extraordinary diversity of unique work. Billed as a new contribution to his memory, the exhibition has a personal theme, relating his extraordinary path with, in addition to some of his greatest works, some thirty drawings not seen before in public.
