A new European network of art studios is being created to welcome refugee artists: led by Edinburgh PrintmakersIn from the Margins is a partnership with four printmaking studios in Ireland, Slovenia, Denmark and the Netherlands. In the first project of its kind, the initiative offers opportunities for thirty artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds to take up supported residencies in internationally-recognised print studios. Funded by Creative Europe (€178,000), the enterprise connects the UK’s first open-access print studio with Cork Printmakers in Ireland, Aga Lab in Amsterdam, Funen Printmaking Studio in Odense, Denmark and the International Centre of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, over three years.

A programme offering residency will run offering opportunities to refugees and asylum-seeking artists and/or artists affected by migration, modelled on Studios of Sanctuary, which originated in Yorkshire in response to the work of migrant artist Mohammad Barrangi – an Iranian artist and former paralympian who became resident artist at Wakefield’s The Art House. Following a call for artists last month, the first residencies are set to begin in January 2022.
