An exhibition at the Granary Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed is showing works by Anne Redpath – one of Scotland’s finest mid-20th century artists.
Galashiels-born, after formative years spent in Edinburgh and the south of France, Anne returned to Scotland in 1934, a penniless single mother of three children. However, she never wavered from pursuing a career as an artist and was eventually elected as President of the Society of Scottish Women Artists in 1944. She later became a standard-bearer for the group now known as the ‘Edinburgh School’, all of whom, including Redpath, had been trained at Edinburgh College of Art.
Curated in partnership with the Fleming Collection of Scottish Art, 25 of Redpath’s richly coloured landscapes, still lives and church interiors form the core of the exhibition, alongside works from fellow Edinburgh School artists such as Elizabeth Blackadder, William Crozier, David Michie and Sir Robin Philipson.
