Letter from Home, showing at Burnside Gallery & Frames in Selkirk, is a response by photographer and painter Javier and Charlotte Ternero to the Aaron Copland piece of the same name.
The exhibition marks the feeling of belonging to places, in the present and the past, and the memories of these that stay with us all our lives. As outlined before on this website, Javier specialises in the use of very old cameras, and prints the photos himself, while Charlotte uses watercolour and oil for her paintings.

Javier says, ‘I was born and brought up in Seville, Spain. After moving to Scotland in 2001, I am now based in the Yarrow valley, Selkirk. As a habit, I try to maintain a certain balance between control and uncertainty. The best way to achieve this, I find, is through practice, accepting and appreciating the nuances of the medium and always keeping up the will to learn.’
Charlotte comes from the Scottish Borders but spent much of her working life in London and Edinburgh, until in 2018 she and Javier moved to Yarrow, near Selkirk. She says, ‘having missed the particular shape and colour of the hills in the Borders all my life, I’m very happy to be able to live in them and paint them; part from memory and part in the field.’
The exhibition’s opening is on Saturday 5th Oct, 2-4pm.
