Eden Court Theatre in Inverness has begun the opening month of its flagship Under Canvas outdoor festival, held in a spectacular new tent twice the size of the previous venue, on lawns next to the banks of the River Ness. Co-curated with the traditional music and Gaelic arts promoter Fèis Rois (Ross-shire Festival), the line-up includes contemporary folk, Scottish traditional music, world music DJs, jazz and blues. Now in its third year, the festival is a past nominee for Event of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. Highlights include Càirdeas (Friendship), which celebrates global Gaelic communities by bringing together artists and music from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton and the Isle of Man, and Uisge (Water), featuring compositions and performances inspired by rivers, oceans, lochs and waterways to mark Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters. Advance table reservations are required at £5 per person, which can be either reclaimed or donated with the bill at the end of the night – see panel, left.
