A new set of artist spaces supporting local creatives has opened at Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh. Craigmillar Now provides affordable workspaces for artists and creatives with studios, marking an expansion for the initiative and furthering its mission to champion creativity and community engagement around the Craigmillar area.

A short distance from its arts and heritage centre in the former St Andrew’s church, the new facilities offer forty artists a dedicated place to develop their practice, and have been made available through co-owner and property manager British Land, as part of its Affordable Space programme, which releases retail and workspace at low or zero-rent, giving local enterprises, charities and community organisations the opportunity to grow, reach new audiences and contribute to the local economy.

Studio-holders are to be invited to exhibit their work in an annual show at the Craigmillar Now arts centre, and have free access to the centre’s art library, a range of professional technical equipment, and will be encouraged to participate in regular studio-holder social events.

With more than twenty tenants already, the organisation expects the remaining spaces to be filled quickly.

Liam Smith, centre director at Fort Kinnaird, said, ‘Welcoming Craigmillar Now to Fort Kinnaird is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting our local community. Providing affordable studio space for local creatives not only helps nurture talent but also strengthens the area’s cultural identity. This project reflects our continued support for Craigmillar Now and the valuable work they do locally. Through partnerships like this, we’re proud to ensure the centre continues to be a place that champions creativity, connection and opportunity for everyone.’
