Nico’s solo venture

The West End of Glasgow is the stage for a talented young chef’s first solo venture. Nico Simeone, 22, who was voted Young Seafood Chef of the Year 2009, has opened La Famiglia on Cleveden Road. At the relaxed, intimate and cosy 44 cover restaurant, diners can expect an array of Italian classics, each with Nico’s own imaginative twist, bringing them up to date with his flair.

“Traditionally, Italian restaurants are renowned for classic, rustic dishes, and without moving away from that entirely, the menu in La Famiglia offers a modern and contemporary twist, right down to the way the dishes are plated and served to customers,” explains Nico. He worked with Brian Maule at Chardon d’Or, before moving to the Michelin starred Number One restaurant in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, under the guidance of head chef, Craig Sandle. He then honed his craft in a number of high end establishments, before opening La Famiglia.

Although La Famiglia offers reasonably priced menus, it is the à la carte menu which shows off Nico’s take on informal fine dining. His signature dishes include braised chicken wings and parmesan gnocchi; filleted hake, wrapped in parma ham and served on an Italian ratatouille with olives, pine nuts and caper berries and modern Tiramisu.
