STATUS need a world interlude is a group show at The Modern Institute’s Aird’s Lane exhibition space in Glasgow. Jim Lambie lives and works in the city, and has specialised in subtle transformations of domestic appliances, exhibiting internationally: here, a washing machine has been given a matte finish and curious colour-cast, giving it the look of having been sculpted from foam. Eva Rothschild‘s giant vinyl curtain piece Lunar divides the gallery space, referencing the materiality in sculpture, the relationship between society and individual, and the body’s physical presence in making and experiencing artwork. Glasgow-based Sue Tompkins contorts everyday gathered words and sentences into a stream of ambiguous mini-statements, typewritten on neon paper; and Michael Wilkinson is showing his most recent paintings, based on his Merseyside home, of vibrant sunsets, with skies overlaid in oriental stylised clouds –
his work has a wide-ranging subtext encompassing power, hierarchy and social and political expression, inspired by pop culture, art history and revolutionary theory.
