A nice way to cheer up the depths of January might be the beer matching at Blackfriars Restaurant and Bar in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Blackfriars – the reincarnation of Black Bo’s – was opened by Andrew Macdonald and Georgie Binder, pictured, last spring. Chef Andrew uses fresh, local and seasonal ingredients with an intuitive understanding of flavour, while Georgie brings her front-of-house experience to create a stylishly friendly atmosphere. Andrew worked with Martin Wishart for two years as well as at First Coast, on Dalry Road.

Before Christmas they reviewed their beers, and introduced a line-up of brews from smaller independent breweries. So, the beer matching event on 15 January will be a good showcase for their new approach. A five-course set menu will be paired with six beers from the Wild Beer Co. Expect roe deer loin with salt baked roots and caramel nut tart to meet their match with the ale from the boundary-pushing Somerset brewery.
