Alongside this year’s Annual Exhibition, the Royal Scottish Academy is showing an exhibition of the work of Alfons Bytautas RSA, featuring a wide range of artwork dating from 2018 through to his most recent collage works, completed earlier this year. Now based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Alfons was born in Selkirk in Scottish Borders and studied at Edinburgh College of Art before studying further at Atelier 17 in Paris – the studio established by Modernist printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Bytautas was Master Printmaker at Edinburgh Printmakers’ Workshop from 1979 to 2009, and was instrumental in developing and promoting innovative print techniques. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1994 and became a Royal Scottish Academician in 2005. The online show includes an engaging video featuring the artist talking about his approach and technique.
