Upright Gallery is to host Points of Departure, a collection of work by Mary Walters, showcasing some of the landscapes she encountered on extensive travels around Europe, after graduating for Edinburgh College of Art in 2012. On her journeys she sought to refine her own personal visual language, responding in a variety of media such as prints, drawings, paintings, books and small-scale sculptures, each experience serving as a point of departure for the development of a seemingly endless exploration of processes and materials. Mary’s background in geography and geology has equipped her with a vocabulary through which she seeks to understand the natural and human processes that form the wild landscapes she has come to love – the mountains of Valencia, the basalts of Iceland, the west coast of Scotland, the far north of Finland, the sea ice of Svalbard, and the mountains of Norway.
