Entering its 180th anniversary year, The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh is mounting an exhibition by award-winning artist Geoff Uglow: The Ploughman refers to his upbringing on a Cornish farm – ploughing, bareback horse-riding and hidden dens in old barns, and the ever-changing landscape, reflected in voluminous and confident paintings and confidence.

Also showing, Modern Masters includes work by Joan Eardley, whose centenary was marked last year at the Gallery, alongside artists from the north-east such as Ian Fleming, Donald Morison Buyers, Barbara Balmer and Frances Walker, and Edinburgh painters including Anne Redpath, William MacTaggart, Robin Philipson, John Houston, and Elizabeth Blackadder, who died last year after making a truly major contribution to Scottish art.
